About page for the Spinal Cord Injury Support Group of South Florida with a group photo of members

Highlight 01

Bringing the focus back to the group.

Before the redesign, the site said very little about the people SCISG serves. There were few photos, no stories and nothing that showed how long the group has been making a difference.

The new site is built around the members. Their faces, stories and events come first, so people who find the group can see themselves in it.

Highlight 02

An events page that keeps members in the loop.

Every meetup, fundraiser and virtual workshop lives on one events page. Members can filter by chapter, location, organizer or category to find what matters to them.

RSVPs happen right on the site, so members don’t get bounced to a third-party signup page and SCISG keeps all its events in one place.

Highlight 03

Finding medical equipment just got easier.

The Durable Medical Equipment (DME) Exchange is a custom feature that lets members post, browse and manage listings for equipment they need or no longer use.

Filters for condition, type, location and transaction type make it quick to find the right item, and equipment that would otherwise sit in a garage ends up with someone who needs it.

Highlight 04

Accessible from start to finish.

The listing forms and admin screens work with screen readers and voice tools like Dragon NaturallySpeaking, so members can post and edit listings regardless of injury level. Listings are submitted from the front end and wait for an admin to approve them with one click. To protect privacy, posters can choose to show their email and phone number in a scrambled format that bots can’t read.

Goal

Put the members front and center

SCISG needed one place for events, resources and connections, and a site that actually showed the people behind the group. Accessibility wasn’t optional: members use screen readers, keyboards and voice control, so every part of the site had to work that way too.

Approach

Custom tools on a familiar platform

I built the site in WordPress with Divi and added custom features where off-the-shelf plugins fell short: a Durable Medical Equipment Exchange, an events system with RSVPs and a doctor directory. Admins can update all of it on their own.

For accessibility, that meant ARIA labels where they help, full keyboard navigation and descriptive alt text on every image. Real photos and member stories replaced the generic imagery.

Results

Built for every member

What launched:

  • A perfect 100 accessibility score in Google PageSpeed Insights.
  • Screen reader support, with ARIA labels where they’re needed.
  • Full keyboard navigation, so every page works with the Tab key alone.
  • Descriptive alt text on every image.

Members now have one place to find events, equipment and each other.
