Bringing the focus back to the group.

One of the primary goals of this project was to bring the focus back to the members of the Spinal Cord Injury Support Group of South Florida (SCISG). Before my revamp, the website offered very little insight into the people whose lives the organization has impacted. It lacked the imagery, stories, and visual representation that could convey the powerful influence SCISG has had for so many years.

This redesign was about more than creating a functional website—it was about amplifying the voices and faces of the community, ensuring members could see themselves reflected in the organization’s digital presence. By incorporating imagery, stories, and features that center around their members, this website now celebrates the group’s incredible legacy and impact.

When. Where. Why - An Updated Events Page to Keep Members Engaged.

The events page is the ultimate hub for everything happening within the Spinal Cord Injury Support Group. Designed to keep members informed and engaged, the page is powered by a robust event management system that organizes upcoming activities into easy-to-navigate categories. Members can filter events by chapter, location, organizer, or category, ensuring they find what’s most relevant to them.

With built-in RSVP functionality, participants can register directly on the site—no more jumping to third-party platforms. Whether it’s a local meetup, a fundraising gala, or a virtual workshop, the events page ensures members always know where to go, when to be there, and why it matters. All without decentralizing SGISG’s event postings on 3rd Party RSVP sites.

Finding vital DME Equipment just go easier.

The Durable Medical Equipment (DME) Exchange is a cornerstone of the Spinal Cord Injury Support Group’s commitment to empowering its members. This custom-built feature allows users to post, browse, and manage listings for vital medical equipment, creating a community-driven marketplace for sharing resources.

With intuitive filters for condition, type, location, and transaction type, members can quickly find what they need or offer items they no longer use. Designed for seamless usability, the DME Exchange fosters collaboration and ensures that valuable equipment reaches those who need it most—turning accessibility into empowerment.

Accessible, Intuitive, and Secure: The DME Exchange

The custom layout and backend for DME item listings ensures full accessibility for users, including those relying on screen readers or tools like Dragon NaturallySpeaking, enabling seamless editing, approval, and posting—regardless of injury level. Members can submit listings directly from the front-end, where they remain pending until administrators one-click approve them after review. To protect privacy, posters have the option to display obfuscated email addresses and phone numbers, combining functionality with security and inclusivity.

Goal

A Digital Space as Impactful as the Mission

The primary goal of the Spinal Cord Injury Support Group website was to create a centralized, professional platform that amplifies the organization’s impact. The new site needed to focus on members, showcasing the faces and stories behind the group’s mission while providing robust tools for events, resources, and connections. Accessibility was a top priority, ensuring that every user, regardless of ability, could seamlessly navigate and interact with the site.

Approach

Combining Custom Features with Member-Centric Design

To achieve the vision, the project focused on developing custom solutions tailored to the organization’s needs. This included a Durable Medical Equipment Exchange, a fully integrated event management system, and a modern doctor directory. Using WordPress and the Divi visual builder, the site was crafted for usability and scalability, empowering administrators to manage updates effortlessly. Accessibility enhancements like ARIA optimization, keyboard navigation, and consistent alt text were implemented to ensure inclusivity. Visual storytelling and thoughtful design brought the focus back to the group’s members.

Results

Accessible, Functional, and Empowering

The completed website achieved:

  • 100% ADA compliance on Google Page Insights, making it fully accessible to users with disabilities.
  • ARIA optimization for screen readers, providing seamless navigation for visually impaired users.
  • One-button tab navigation, allowing users to move through the site effortlessly using just the tab key.
  • Consistent and descriptive alternative text for all images, ensuring a rich and inclusive user experience.

The new website empowers SCISG members with tools, resources, and connections in a digital space that truly reflects their mission and impact. It’s more than a website—it’s a hub for community and empowerment.
